Afrika Mayibuye Movement president Floyd Shivambu and members of his team were victims of a vehicle break-in at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on Wednesday, just before attending a verification meeting for the party’s ward councillor candidates.

According to Shivambu, thieves broke into their hired vehicle and stole a travel bag, a handbag, and a backpack containing a MacBook Pro laptop, two iPads, watches, personal identity documents, bank cards, and other valuables.

Images of the alleged suspect, obtained from the V&A Waterfront’s security and control room, have been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) as part of the investigation. A criminal case was opened at Table Bay Harbour Police Station. Shivambu said several other victims were also at the police station reporting similar vehicle break-ins.

The incident occurred while Afrika Mayibuye continues the nationwide physical verification of its ward councillor nominees ahead of the 2026 local government elections, following the party’s Extended Politburo resolution to finalise candidate selection.

Despite the incident, Shivambu said the movement would continue with its programme, stating that “no amount of distraction will stop our march towards victory.”

Police investigations are ongoing.
