Veteran Actress Slu Kaula Returns to iZwi Lomzansi FM with Inspiring New Saturday Show
For veteran actress, broadcaster and educator Silungile “Slu” Kaula, returning to the airwaves is more than a career move. It is a homecoming.
The acclaimed actress, best known for her role in the Mzansi Magic film Life Cover, has officially returned to Durban community radio station iZwi Lomzansi FM, where she now hosts the Saturday morning show from 7am to 9am.
Kaula’s return marks the beginning of a new chapter for both the broadcaster and the station, as she promises a programme that goes beyond entertainment to tackle real conversations shaping South African communities.
Speaking about her new show, Kaula said listeners can expect engaging discussions on current community issues, arts and culture, relationships, personal development and the latest motoring trends. The programme will also shine a spotlight on both legendary and emerging talent in South Africa’s entertainment industry.
“Our aim is to give listeners deeper insight into both established and upcoming celebrities in the industry,” she said.
“We will also discuss the latest cars, our culture, and the relationship and life challenges faced by many people.”
For Kaula, the return is particularly meaningful because iZwi Lomzansi FM is where she previously built a reputation as an arts broadcaster. During her earlier stint at the station, she interviewed and provided a platform for some of KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest entertainment names, including DJ Tira, Big Nuz, L’vovo, Andile Mxhakaza, Ndumiso Dlamini and Bheki Mkhwane.
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the station’s management for once again entrusting her with a microphone.
Kaula’s journey into the performing arts began long before television audiences came to know her. At just 12 years old, she enrolled in Speech and Drama classes while still in primary school, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in the creative industry.
She later studied Dramatic Arts at Ridge Park College, where she achieved a distinction in matric, before enrolling at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Edgewood Campus. There, she majored in English and Dramatic Arts, further sharpening the skills that would define her career.
While still at university, Kaula worked as a freelance entertainment journalist for a KwaZulu-Natal-based Zulu newspaper. She also lent her voice to numerous radio and television commercials, steadily building a diverse portfolio in the media industry.
After graduating, she appeared in several acclaimed theatre productions, sharing the stage with celebrated South African performers including Dr Gcina Mhlophe, Dr Mbongeni Ngema, Given Jikwana and Skhura Makhura.
Her theatre credits include leading roles in Isitwetwetwe and an all-female adaptation of Asinamali, performances that further cemented her reputation as a versatile actress.
Driven by a passion for youth development, Kaula also established the non-profit organisation Vuselela Unembeza, which focuses on empowering young people in rural communities through drama and performing arts.
Away from the spotlight, she continues to shape young lives in another important role. Kaula serves as a Departmental Head at Paul Sykes Primary School in Newlands West, balancing education, broadcasting and acting while remaining committed to uplifting her community.
Her return to iZwi Lomzansi FM signals more than the comeback of a familiar voice. It represents the return of a seasoned storyteller determined to inspire, educate and entertain a new generation of listeners.
