KZN Athletics President Steve Mkasi Accused of Altercation with Athlete as Resignation Calls Grow

Steve Mkasi

KwaZulu-Natal’s athletics community has been thrust into the spotlight following allegations that provincial athletics president Steve Mkasi was involved in a physical altercation with an athlete from Ama Ravens Athletics Club, an incident that could intensify scrutiny of the province’s sporting leadership.

The alleged confrontation took place on Saturday and has quickly become a major talking point within athletics circles across KwaZulu-Natal.

According to KwaZulu-Natal-based athletics reporter Thathe Msimango, the incident was preceded by a heated telephone conversation between Mkasi and the athlete earlier in the afternoon. It is alleged that the exchange escalated into a face-to-face confrontation, resulting in a physical altercation.

Further claims suggest that, in the aftermath of the incident, Ama Ravens Athletics Club founder Mthoko Khuzwayo demanded that Mkasi step down as president of KwaZulu-Natal Athletics within three days.

It is also alleged that Mkasi offered money in an attempt to prevent details of the incident from becoming public.

At this stage, MDNtn News has not independently verified these allegations.

Efforts to obtain comment from Mkasi and representatives of Ama Ravens Athletics Club were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Their responses will be published once they are received.

The allegations are likely to send shockwaves through KwaZulu-Natal’s athletics fraternity, where questions are expected to mount over the circumstances surrounding the reported incident. As the story develops, attention will focus on whether formal complaints are lodged and whether the provincial athletics federation launches an investigation.
