Mapapila residents remain without reliable water three years after R4.5 million project refurbishment
MAPAPILA VILLAGE, LIMPOPO – Community members in Mapapila village, under Collins Chabane Local Municipality, continue to face severe water challenges, raising questions about the effectiveness of a R4.5 million water project refurbished three years ago.
Residents were expecting the Executive Mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Miyelani Chauke, to officially open the completed water project on 27 October 2026. However, the planned event was postponed until further notice, leaving questions about the project’s status and when the community can expect a lasting solution to its water crisis.
MDNTV visited Mapapila village to assess the situation on the ground and establish why residents continue to experience water difficulties despite the substantial investment in the project.
The ongoing challenges have raised concerns about whether the refurbished infrastructure is delivering the intended benefits to the community, which depends on reliable access to water for household needs.
The postponement of the official opening has also prompted questions about the reasons behind the decision and whether the project is fully operational.
Residents need clarity on the condition of the infrastructure, the reasons for the continued water challenges and what interventions are planned to ensure a consistent water supply.
MDNTV will seek comment from Vhembe District Municipality and Collins Chabane Local Municipality regarding the postponement, the project’s current operational status and the measures being taken to address residents’ concerns.
For the people of Mapapila, the central issue remains , why is the 4.5 million water project not supplying all households on a daily basis.
