Cartrack Expert Testifies in AKA and Tibz Murder Trial
A Cartrack fleet administrator took the stand in the Durban High Court today, Wednesday, 28 October, as the trial of seven men accused of murdering rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane continued.
State witness Carel Rothmann was called to testify about vehicle-tracking data allegedly linking two cars to the movements of the accused around the time of the murders.
However, defence lawyers objected to his testimony, arguing that they had not received sufficient technical reports, a complete affidavit or adequate information about his qualifications. They also requested time to consult their own expert.
Judge Nomfundo Sipunzi dismissed the objections, allowing Rothmann to proceed with his testimony.
His evidence focused on tracking data from a grey Volkswagen Polo and a Hyundai Grand i10, which the State alleges were rented by accused number four, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, from Sonwabile Bani.
According to the State, the vehicles were allegedly used by spotters monitoring AKA’s movements before the fatal shooting outside Wish restaurant on Durban’s Florida Road.
The tracking data reportedly showed the vehicles travelling in the same direction and being near locations linked to AKA’s movements before the shooting. Their movements away from the Florida Road area after the murders also came under scrutiny.
AKA and Tibz were shot dead outside Wish restaurant on 10 February 2023.
All seven accused have pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and firearm-related offences.
The trial continues.
