Operation Shanela 2: Over 1,000 Arrested in Mpumalanga Crime Crackdown
More than 1,000 suspects have been arrested in Mpumalanga following a major weekend crime operation led by the province’s Acting Police Commissioner, as authorities intensified efforts to tackle serious offences threatening communities.
Operation Shanela 2, conducted from Thursday, 9 July, to Sunday, 12 July 2026, resulted in the arrest of suspects linked to crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery.
The operation was headed by Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, who joined senior police officials in coordinated actions across several policing precincts.
The arrests form part of a wider police strategy aimed at disrupting criminal networks, removing dangerous suspects from communities and targeting locations often associated with violent crime.
Illegal liquor outlets targeted in crime hotspot raids
One of the key operations took place on the evening of Friday, 10 July 2026, when police teams moved into the Calcutta and Kabokweni policing precincts.
The raids focused on illegal liquor outlets believed to contribute to violent crimes, including murder, assault and rape.
During the crackdown, police arrested 139 suspects across Mpumalanga for illegal liquor dealing. Authorities say these establishments often become hotspots where criminal activities escalate and where serious offences are committed.
The operation involved senior police leadership and law enforcement teams working together to enforce compliance and reduce crime risks linked to unregulated alcohol sales.
More than 200 illegal immigrants arrested
As part of the provincewide operation, police also arrested 222 illegal immigrants for allegedly contravening the Immigration Act.
The arrests highlight the continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to address immigration violations while maintaining broader crime prevention initiatives across Mpumalanga.
Police operations such as Shanela are conducted regularly across South Africa as part of efforts to improve public safety and increase pressure on individuals involved in criminal activities.
Suspects to appear in Mpumalanga courts
The arrested suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate’s Courts across Mpumalanga from Monday, 13 July 2026.
Police have confirmed that investigations will continue as cases move through the legal process.
Authorities have urged communities to continue working with law enforcement by reporting criminal activities and providing information that can assist in bringing offenders to justice.
The latest arrests mark another major intervention by police in Mpumalanga as officials continue efforts to combat violent crime and restore safety in affected communities.
