Modiba pleads with Broos to stay on as Bafana coach

Bafana Bafana defender Aubrey Modiba has urged head coach Hugo Broos to remain in charge of the national team, insisting the veteran Belgian still has “unfinished business” with South African football.
Modiba’s plea comes after Bafana’s inspiring 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end with a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday.
Despite the painful exit, South Africa made history by reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time and ending a 24-year wait to qualify for the global showpiece on merit.
Broos, who took over the national team in 2021, has been widely praised for transforming both the team’s mentality and performances.
Although the 74-year-old previously suggested that the World Cup would be his final tournament before retirement, his post-match comments hinted that he may reconsider after admitting he still has plenty of energy to continue coaching.
Speaking after the match, Modiba made it clear he wants Broos to stay.
“I hope he stays. I really hope he stays,” said the Mamelodi Sundowns defender.
“He still has unfinished business with AFCON, so I hope he remains our coach.”
Modiba also credited Broos with changing the mindset of South African players, saying the team no longer fears any opponent.
“He has made a massive impact on South African football. Before he arrived, we weren’t consistently qualifying for major tournaments. He has changed that.”
“He has also changed the mentality of the players. We don’t fear anyone anymore, regardless of the big names. We believe in ourselves and believe we can compete against any team in the world.”
Meanwhile, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has yet to announce Broos’ future, with a decision expected after the team returns home from the United States.
