Dlangalala warns about looming goalkeeping crisis at Bafana
South African football analyst Zipho Dlangalala has raised a concern that could become a major problem for new Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane.
Mosimane was confirmed as Bafana’s new coach on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation and uncertainty over the position.
However, Dlangalala believes the national team could face a goalkeeping crisis in the near future if the situation is not addressed.
He has noted a shortage of South African goalkeepers playing regularly in the professional ranks. Dlangalala believes this should be a major concern for Bafana.
“Is there a goalkeeping crisis in South Africa?” Dlangalala asked. “What happens after Ronwen Williams, who is 34 right now?
“Ricardo Goss is 32. Sipho Chaine will be turning 30 in December 2026. So then who, from where, with what experience?”
Dlangalala also pointed out the number of foreign goalkeepers currently featuring in the Betway Premiership.
At least one non-South African goalkeeper is part of the current squad at each of these clubs:
AmaZulu, Chippa United, Durban City, Golden Arrows, Kruger United (two), Mamelodi Sundowns (two), Marumo Gallants (two), Orlando Pirates, Polokwane City, Richards Bay (two), Sekhukhune United (two), Siwelele and TS Galaxy.
In many cases, these foreign goalkeepers are also regular starters. Dlangalala believes the situation needs to change if Bafana are to have a strong pool of goalkeepers in the future.
With the next FIFA World Cup scheduled for 2030, he hopes a new generation of South African goalkeepers will emerge in the PSL.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 is over,” he said. “The next one is coming in 2030. That is four years from now.”
Despite his concerns, Dlangalala remains hopeful that clubs can still make changes.
He pointed out that the transfer window remains open, giving teams an opportunity to strengthen their goalkeeping departments.
“But with the transfer window still open, changes are still possible,” he said.
