TOUGH REFEREE WHO ONCE SENT OFF 10 PLAYERS TO HANDLE BAFANA’S CRUCIAL WORLD CUP CLASH
Bafana Bafana’s must-win FIFA World Cup clash against South Korea will be handled by Argentine referee Facundo Tello, an official known for taking a firm stance on discipline.
FIFA has appointed Tello to take charge of Thursday’s Group A encounter at Estadio Monterrey, a match that could determine whether South Africa progresses to the knockout stages.
Tello is no stranger to major attention. The 44-year-old made global headlines in November 2022 after issuing 10 red cards during the Argentina Champions Trophy final between Boca Juniors and Racing Club.
The match descended into chaos after Racing Club took a 2-1 lead in extra time through Carlos Alcaraz. A confrontation followed after the goal celebration, with Tello responding by sending off several players from both teams.
His strict approach could be a warning for Bafana, who have already faced disciplinary problems in the tournament.
Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole and veteran attacker Themba Zwane were both sent off during South Africa’s opening defeat to Mexico.
Teboho Mokoena will also miss the South Korea clash through suspension after collecting his second yellow card of the tournament against Czechia.
Midfielder Thalente Mbatha is also on a yellow card and could miss the next match if he is booked again and Bafana progress.
With Tello known for punishing misconduct, South Africa will need to keep their composure in what promises to be a high-pressure encounter.
Despite his tough reputation, Tello is regarded as one of South America’s leading referees. He has been a FIFA-listed official since 2019 and also officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
He will be assisted by fellow Argentines Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Colombian official Andres Rojas will serve as the fourth official.
As Bafana prepare for one of their biggest matches in recent history, all eyes will not only be on the players, but also on the referee who once sent 10 footballers for an early shower.
