Man Arrested After Police Intercept Toyota Hilux Carrying More Than 258kg of Dagga in Sekhukhune
Major Drug Bust as Police Seize Dagga Worth Over R500,000
A routine journey through Sekhukhune came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when police intercepted a vehicle allegedly carrying more than a quarter of a tonne of dagga, leading to the arrest of a 44-year-old man and the seizure of drugs valued at over R500,000.
The operation unfolded after police received intelligence about a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal substances into the district. Acting swiftly on the information, officers moved to intercept the vehicle before it could continue its journey.
Tip-Off Leads Police to Suspect Vehicle
According to police, officers identified a silver-grey Toyota Hilux bakkie matching the description provided through operational intelligence.
The vehicle was spotted at Steelbridge in Ga-Malekana village as it entered the Sekhukhune policing area.
Police stopped the bakkie and conducted a search after obtaining the driver’s permission.
What officers allegedly discovered inside would quickly turn the operation into a significant drug seizure.
Hundreds of Kilograms of Dagga Found
During the search, police uncovered a large quantity of dagga packed inside black plastic bags and loaded onto the vehicle.
Authorities said the driver was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the drugs.
He was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of dagga.
Police confirmed that the confiscated dagga weighed approximately 258.251 kilograms.
The entire consignment was seized as evidence.
Court Appearance Expected
The 44-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 18 June 2026.
He is set to face a charge relating to the possession of dagga.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt the movement of illegal drugs through Limpopo and prevent criminal networks from using the province as a transport route.
Police Commissioner Praises Officers
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the officers involved in the operation, describing the interception as a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.
“This interception sends a clear message that Sekhukhune District is not a transit route for drugs. We urge members of the community to continue sharing information with the police so that we can rid our streets of illicit substances and put behind bars those who profit from these drugs,” she said.
Investigations Continue
Police have confirmed that investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the seizure.
The latest arrest highlights the crucial role that community information and intelligence-driven policing continue to play in combating drug-related crime across Limpopo.
For now, a Toyota Hilux stopped on a rural road in Sekhukhune has become the centre of yet another warning from law enforcement: the net is tightening on those attempting to move illegal drugs through the province.
