The multidisciplinary disruptive operation conducted on Thursday in the areas of Bagdacht and Slaaihoek near Waterval Boven in Mpumalanga (MP) resulted in the arrest of several suspects linked to illicit mining activities, also suspected to be illegal immigrants.

According to MP SAPS Spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat illegal mining and related criminal activities within the province.
“During the operation, suspects aged between 19 and 46 were arrested for Contraventions of the Immigration Act of South Africa. Additional charges include possession of gold-bearing material (GBM) and possession of gold-bearing equipment (GBE).
“Various exhibits believed to have been utilised in illegal mining operations were confiscated, including pendukas and generators,” said Nonyane-Mpe.
Nonyane-Mpe said the arrested suspects are expected to appear at Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court soon.
She further said the detectives are working collaboratively with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to ascertain the status of the arrested suspects.
“Law enforcement authorities remain committed to intensifying operations aimed at eradicating illegal mining activities and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice,” she said.
