Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Tamirepi Matonhodze, have pleaded guilty to multiple charges in a case that has drawn serious attention in Johannesburg.
The pair appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, where they admitted to the offences brought against them. Their convictions mark a significant development in the case, with sentencing proceedings now scheduled for April 24, 2026.
Mugabe pleaded guilty to violating immigration laws and pointing a firearm. Matonhodze, on the other hand, admitted to a string of charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice, and breaching immigration regulations.
The charges are linked to a February 19, 2026 incident at Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park. An altercation reportedly broke out between the accused and a security guard. The situation escalated, leading to the guard being assaulted and shot in the back as he tried to escape. He was later found outside the property by another security guard, who quickly alerted authorities.
The case has highlighted concerns around violent incidents and illegal firearm possession. Authorities say they remain focused on ensuring accountability and justice, particularly in cases involving serious harm.
