What was meant to be a breakthrough year for Soweto-based designer Hlumelo Nyaluza took an unexpected turn when he discovered that a tiny comma error on his website had cost him millions of rands in lost revenue over an eight-month period.

The Eastern Cape–born creative, who rose from building apps to designing luxury bags, had watched his work capture global attention within a single week — with features in New York, Miami, Australia, Mexico, London and several other major cities. His dream was unfolding faster than he ever imagined… until a technical glitch quietly swallowed his momentum.

But instead of giving up, Nyaluza is bouncing back with renewed purpose.
His latest creation, the HN Lux Carrier Bag, is more than just a stylish accessory — it is the heart of a new mission to support GBV survivors and struggling South Africans trying to start small businesses. Nyaluza has committed a portion of the profits from every bag sold to helping people rebuild their lives.

Designed in Soweto and made in South Africa, the spacious carrier bag is crafted from 100% natural artist’s canvas and finished with a hand screen-printed African-inspired HN monogram. It combines luxury and durability with leather handles, satin sides, and comes in two elegant colour combinations: grey & black and cream & brown.

At R1,499, it is a proudly local bag with a global aesthetic — and a meaningful purpose behind it.
The first person to benefit from Nyaluza’s pledge is Sandiswa, a single mother of three and a GBV survivor from Snake Park in Soweto. Using proceeds from the bag sales, Nyaluza purchased a potato cutting machine and a double gas deep fryer to help her start her kota business. In a gesture of gratitude and solidarity, Sandiswa also volunteered to model the new collection.

For Nyaluza, giving back — even during one of the lowest points of his career — is his way of keeping the spirit of Ubuntu alive.
The young designer hopes South Africans will continue supporting locally made, African excellence as he rebuilds his brand and strengthens his mission to empower others.
