Disaster Management teams across KwaZulu-Natal will be on high alert on Thursday after a severe Level 4 weather warning was issued for large parts of the province.
According to the provincial department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the warning for November 27 affects several districts, including Umgungundlovu, Ugu, Harry Gwala, Amajuba, and eThekwini. Numerous communities within these districts are expected to experience severe thunderstorms.
The alert follows a destructive storm in the uMshwathi Local Municipality on Sunday, which left one woman dead and two people still missing. Search and rescue teams continue to look for the missing individuals who were swept away by the storm.
Authorities warned that the coming weather system could result in widespread localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Major roads and bridges may become unsafe, and residents have been urged to brace for hail, strong winds, and potential damage to property.
MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi said all disaster teams have been activated to respond quickly to any emergencies. He stressed that the recent devastation in parts of KZN is a reminder of how powerful these storms can be.
Giving an update on the ongoing recovery efforts in New Hanover, Buthelezi confirmed that 465 people from 108 households have already been affected by previous storms. A total of 117 homes were damaged—50 partially and 67 completely—leaving 79 people without shelter.
He commended the rapid response and support from government departments and humanitarian organisations who are assisting families in distress.
