SAPS Blitzes Gauteng: Over 17,000 Counterfeit and Illicit Items Worth R770,000 Confiscated

In a massive blow to the underground economy, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has seized more than 17,000 counterfeit, contraband, and illicit items with an estimated street value exceeding R770,000.

The high-impact crackdown, executed by the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit alongside brand protectors and various law enforcement agencies, took place across multiple hotspots—including Heidelberg, Orange Farm, Fordsburg, and Brackendowns—between Monday, 26 October, and Friday, 30 October 2026.

The week-long operational blitz targeted retail shops and private properties across several districts, yielding massive seizures:Heidelberg (Sedibeng District): On Monday, authorities raided eight shops, confiscating 4,779 items valued at R500,490.

The haul included dangerous illicit pharmaceuticals, counterfeit poisons, consumable products, cellphone accessories, Honeyite products, textiles, and toys.

In Orange Farm: On Tuesday, a sweep of five shops resulted in the seizure of 1,029 counterfeit consumables, textiles, electronics, and toys valued at approximately R62,370.

At Fordsburg (Johannesburg District): Wednesday’s operations strictly targeted five local shops, resulting in the massive confiscation of 11,981 counterfeit consumable goods worth R137,729.

In Brackendowns (Ekurhuleni District): Wrapping up the week on Friday, the Counterfeit Unit—reinforced by the Gauteng Anti-Hijacking Unit—raided a residential home. The team recovered seven suspected stolen Samsung air conditioners valued at R70,000.

All recovered merchandise has been strictly confiscated for further investigation, and official criminal cases have been registered.

Gauteng SAPS reaffirmed its uncompromising stance against illegal trading, stating that these operations are specifically designed to disrupt illicit syndicates, safeguard consumers from potentially hazardous products, and protect legitimate local businesses and brand owners from unfair competition.

Law enforcement continues to emphasize that public cooperation is vital in winning the war against contraband.

SAPS urges anyone with information regarding the manufacturing, storage, or sale of counterfeit goods to immediately contact their nearest police station or report anonymously via the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111.
