High-Profile Presence: Duduzile Zuma Spotted at EFF’s Tshela Thupa Rally in Soweto Amid Final Election Push
High-profile political figure Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was spotted attending the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) signature Tshela Thupa Rally.
The event took place at the packed Orlando Amstel Arena (Orlando Stadium) in Soweto.
Her appearance adds an intriguing layer of political alignment to what the red berets have dubbed “The Mother of All Rallies,” as political parties make their final campaign push ahead of South Africa’s highly anticipated Local Government Elections.
The Tshela Thupa Rally serves as the traditional closing campaign event for the EFF. EFF Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema is expected to give the final “line of march” to party volunteers and outline their municipal service delivery manifesto.
On Saturday morning, thousands of EFF supporters in bright red regalia streamed into the 40,000-capacity arena, turning the stands into a sea of red.
The presence of prominent figures like Zuma-Sambudla comes at a crucial time for the EFF. Pre-election polls indicate the party is maintaining a stable baseline support of roughly 10%, matching its performance from the 2021 municipal elections.
However, the party faces intense pressure to defend its territory, particularly following the emergence of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), which heavily impacted the EFF’s traditional support base during national elections.
As part of their local government manifesto, the EFF has campaigned heavily on a platform of eliminating municipal tender systems, insourcing general workers, and providing free basic services for grant beneficiaries.
Voting is scheduled to commence nationwide on Monday, making this weekend’s massive show of force in Soweto the critical final pitch to capture undecided urban voters.
