Zuluboy Returns With New Song Freedom After Two Year Hiatus for Mandela Day
After two years away from the commercial music spotlight, South African hip hop pioneer Zuluboy is stepping back onto the stage with a song carrying a message far bigger than his return.
The acclaimed rapper, actor and cultural activist has announced the release of Freedom, a new single arriving on Nelson Mandela International Day. More than a comeback, the track pays tribute to the enduring legacy of South Africa’s first democratically elected president while reflecting on the meaning of resilience, hope and self determination.
The release marks Zuluboy’s first official music launch since relocating to New York City in 2024, a move that temporarily took him away from the local commercial music scene. Although fans have waited two years for new material, the artist insists his passion for creating music never faded.
Returning with what he describes as a renewed global perspective, Zuluboy says Freedom reconnects him with the values and struggles that have shaped both his career and South Africa’s history.
“Freedom is a powerful anthem of resilience, hope, and self determination that speaks to the enduring strength of the human spirit.”
He said releasing the song on Mandela Day was a deliberate decision.
“The timing of the release on Mandela Day is deeply intentional. The dream that comes to life through the ultimate opportunities that freedom brings is a dream worth fighting for and keeping alive, just as Nelson Mandela did.”
For Zuluboy, the two year gap between releases should not be mistaken for a break from music. While he stepped away from the commercial spotlight, he says the creative process never stopped.
“The significance of my return is my love for music. I never stopped recording. I do music because I love it and I hear it. It’s something that I will never stop doing, whether I’m releasing or not.”
His latest release comes at a time when South African artists continue to find audiences far beyond the country’s borders, blending international experiences with local stories that resonate at home.
With Freedom, Zuluboy hopes to remind listeners that Mandela’s message remains relevant, particularly in a world still grappling with inequality, division and the ongoing pursuit of opportunity.
The single will be available on all major digital streaming platforms on Nelson Mandela International Day, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of South Africa’s most respected voices in hip hop.
