Zulu opens up on first Pirates Man-of-the-Match award
Orlando Pirates defender Sbangani Zulu has opened up about his first Man-of-the-Match award.
The defender also thanked the Buccaneers supporters for the incredible love they have shown him.
Zulu was one of Pirates’ surprise signings during the currenct transfer window. He joined the Soweto giants from Richards Bay FC.
His opportunity arrived after captain Nkosinathi Sibisi suffered an injury recently.
Zulu grabbed his chance with both hands and has quickly become a fan favourite.
His impressive performances were rewarded against Kruger United this week.
The defender was named Man-of-the-Match after Pirates demolished the Village Boys 4-0 at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
“I am really happy to get the Man-of-the-Match award because it is my first time,” said Zulu.
“But I would like to thank the guys for encouraging and supporting me in every way possible.
“If it was not for the team effort, we would not have managed to handle them. They were coming at us, so we had to put in an extra effort.
“We had to produce a serious display to get the three points and keep a clean sheet.”
Zulu also produced a crucial goal-line clearance during the match. He rescued Pirates after Sipho Chaine had come off his line.
“I saw Sipho going to the first post, so I realised the second post was unattended,” he explained. “So I went there, and it happened that he sent his header there.”
The defender has also been blown away by the reception from Pirates supporters. He says he has never experienced such love during his career.
Big chants of “Zulu!” echoed around the stadium whenever he received possession.
“I would love to thank the supporters,” he said. “Since my arrival, they have shown me so much support.
“When I touch the ball, you hear the chants. That encourages me a lot and makes me feel comfortable.”
