Women Take the Lead at 2025 BRICS+ Agriculture Summit in Durban
The 2025 BRICS+ Agriculture Investment & Trade Summit, held in Durban, marked a major milestone for women in agribusiness, securing an impressive R9.42 billion in trade and investment deals. The summit focused on advancing women-led enterprises and supporting agricultural transformation across the Global South.
Among the key outcomes was a US$456 million sugar export agreement between South African and Brazilian companies, signaling strengthened trade ties within the bloc. A further US$25.5 million was committed to constructing a new sugar factory in KwaZulu-Natal, while US$16.11 million was allocated to poultry production through a regional partnership with Zimbabwe. Additionally, over US$5 million was directed towards critical infrastructure projects in South Africa, including fertilizer production, solar energy development, and borehole drilling.
These investments highlight the growing recognition of women entrepreneurs and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as key drivers of inclusive economic growth and food security. The summit not only showcased the potential of women in agriculture but also underscored the importance of collaboration across BRICS+ nations in addressing global agricultural challenges.
