Media Statement CAPE TOWN – The determination of police members in the Winelands District to ensure safer communities, resulted in the arrest of two suspects on Sunday 24 March 2024, when they were found in possession of a prohibited firearm and cannabis in isolated incidents. Prince Alfred Hamlet police members responded to information indicating that a firearm is being stored at an address in an informal settlement. The members proceeded to Madeliefie Street at around 16:00 and entered the identified premises. They searched the shack and recovered a firearm hidden in a plastic bag. This resulted in the detention of an adult man on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated intervention, Tulbagh police conducted an integrated vehicle checkpoint operation on the R46. When they approached the driver of a white Suzuki, it was evident that he was nervous and became restless as the police members interacted with him whilst searching the vehicle. The members confiscated 5, 9 kg of compressed cannabis and cash. Whilst they were busy with the suspect, he told one of the police members closest to him to take all the cash in return to be released, which resulted in the detention of the 40-year-old man on charges of dealing in cannabis and bribery. Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Ceres and Wolseley Magistrate’s Courts on the mentioned charges. Ends
