GAUTENG – 366 Suspects were arrested for various offenses from Friday 10 January 2025 to Sunday morning, 12 January 2025 by members of law enforcement and other stakeholders during the high-density Safer Festive Season operations conducted across Ekurhuleni Policing Precincts. Four unlicensed firearms were removed from the streets in the District and 17 illegal shebeens shutdown. Amongst the suspects, 189 were nabbed by the Detectives during their suspects raiding operations, which includes 111 for contact crimes, 38 for other serious crimes, 39 for Gender Based Violence and 16 for property crime. The main operations were conducted in the Tembisa area under the leadership of the Deputy District Commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela on Saturday 11 January 2025 whereby 29 suspects were nabbed for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, 7 suspects were arrested for being in possession and dealing in drugs, 25 undocumented persons were arrested, 5 illegal shebeens closed, and 3 Traffic fines to the value of R1400-00 issued. In Kwa-Thema area on Friday 10 January 2025 at 01:00, The Police were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious white Hyndai Elantra driving along Joe Mzamane street headed opposite to the Police Station. The Police followed the vehicle which started to accelerate. They stopped the vehicle with 4 occupants inside, and found a 9mm Taurus Pistol with 15 live ammunition of which they failed to produce its license, and a bag consisting of house breaking implements. All the 4 suspects aged between 30 to 45 were arrested and charged for being in possession of unlicensed firearm and house breaking implements. In Daveyton area, on Friday 10 January 2025, an intelligence driven operation comprising of Ekurhuleni infrastructure unit led to the arrest of a 33-year-old man along Pretoria Road, Daveyton, who was found in possession of 7.65 Pistol with two live ammunition and the serial number and the name of the firearm were obliterated. The suspect was detained at Daveyton for Poss of unlicensed In Tembisa on Friday 10 January 2025 at 11:00, Tembisa Police were doing patrols at Phuma silwe Squatter camp and saw a blue Nissan Micra with 4 occupants. Members stopped the vehicle and the driver jumped out. Members noticed that the driver had a firearm on his right hip. Members started to chase the suspect and managed to arrest him. The suspect was found with. 22 Ruger Revolverwith 5 live rounds. Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm was stolen at Garsfontein in March 2022 and the vehicle was also stolen in Mamelodi East in October 2024. The suspect was placed under arrest and detained at Tembisa SAPS for possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle. The other 3 suspects escaped. In Tembisa South on 11 January 2025 at night, members of Ekurhuleni Trio task team, Highway patrol, Tembisa South crime prevention and RSP security who formed part of High Density operations in Tembisa, were patrolling along Andrew Mapheto and Corner Fish Eagle streets. Concerned Community members stopped the law enforcers and informed them that 3 suspects were trying to rob someone of their property with a firearm. The suspects matching the description were spotted along Andrew Mapheto Road, Tembisa towards the substation. When the suspects saw the Police, they ran into the bushes towards the river. Members gave chase on foot and apprehended all the 3 suspects. The suspects were found with unlicensed firearm and two suspected stolen cellphones. The 3 suspects were detained in Tembisa South SAPS for possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property Ekurhuleni Deputy District Commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela expressed pride to the law enforcers who swiftly responded in effecting the arrests as well as community members who always provide accurate information to the Police regarding crime to ensure that criminals do not get space to breathe in the District Ends
