Wanted SAPS Colonel Ismael Dawood to Surrender Over R350,000 Extortion Charges
A dramatic chapter is set to unfold on Monday morning as senior South African Police Service Crime Intelligence officer Colonel Ismael, also known as Ismail, Dawood is expected to hand himself over to police following the issuing of an active warrant for his arrest.
The veteran officer, who commands an elite anti kidnapping task team and has built a reputation through high profile operations against organised crime, is expected to arrive at Morningside Police Station at 08:00 on Monday, 20 July 2026, accompanied by his legal team.
His surrender comes after police launched a search for him when he failed to appear at an earlier arranged handover at Sandton Police Station.
Active Arrest Warrant Over Alleged Extortion
Colonel Dawood is wanted on allegations of extortion involving more than R350,000. The case is reportedly linked to a family dispute that has now escalated into a criminal investigation.
Following his failure to surrender as previously arranged, members of the Gauteng Anti Corruption Unit conducted a raid at his townhouse complex in Sandhurst, Johannesburg, in an effort to locate him.

Despite the police operation, Dawood’s legal representative, Advocate Du Plessis, maintains that his client has never intended to evade the law.
According to his lawyer, Dawood remains committed to cooperating fully with investigators and will voluntarily surrender on Monday morning. He is also expected to submit a formal bail application shortly after handing himself over.
His legal team has rejected any suggestion that he has been on the run.
