Pietermaritzburg Woman Charged With Murder and Arson After Ex Boyfriend and Partner Die in House Fire
A devastating house fire that claimed the lives of two people has left a Pietermaritzburg community in shock, as police allege the blaze was not an accident but a carefully planned act of violence.
Nelisiwe Zililo has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder and arson after investigators alleged that she set her former boyfriend and his new partner alight inside their home in France, Mpumelelo, on 10 July 2026.
She appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly after her arrest and remains in custody while bail proceedings continue.
According to uMgungundlovu police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala, Thornville police launched an investigation immediately after the deadly fire and arrested the suspect based on evidence gathered during the inquiry.
Police allege that Zililo purchased petrol before the attack and concealed it near the property. Investigators further claim that she sent threatening messages to the victims beforehand, allegedly warning that they would be burned alive.
The victims, Mzomuhle Shezi and his partner, Yoliswa Ngubane, suffered severe burn injuries during the fire. Despite efforts to save them, both later died from their injuries.
Shezi’s death has left behind two young daughters, adding another layer of heartbreak to an already devastating tragedy.
A member of the Shezi family told MDN News that the attack was allegedly linked to the breakdown of Shezi’s previous relationship with the accused. The family has since called for justice as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
“Our deepest condolences go to the Shezi and Ngubane families,” the source said. “May they find strength during this painful time, and may justice take its course.”
The case has once again drawn attention to South Africa’s ongoing struggle with violent crimes linked to relationship disputes and jealousy. Incidents involving intimate partners continue to place families and communities at the centre of unimaginable loss.
Police investigations are continuing, and the matter is expected to return to court as legal proceedings move forward.
As the criminal case unfolds, investigators are expected to present further evidence before the court while the families of both victims continue to seek answers and accountability. The accused remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
