Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Two Lesotho nationals suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities at Mashobota Farm were arrested in Rob Ferreira hospital after they were found with gunshot wounds on Friday, 26 July 2024. According to information, the two suspects aged 29 and 30 years without documentation to be in South Africa were allegedly shot at in the illegal mining site. Police attached to Mpumalanga Operation Vala Umgodi immediately instituted investigation, which led them to Rob Ferreira hospital where the two were arrested. Currently, the two suspects are under police guard after their arrest for Contravention of Immigration Act of South Africa. Further investigation is carried out to ascertain circumstances surrounding their involvement in the shooting. Police further arrested other three suspects aged between 24 and 44 nationals, two Zimbabweans and one Lesotho national who were rendering assistance to the injured suspects in hospital. The Department of Home Affairs will be roped in to further investigate the status of all suspects that are in South Africa without proper documentation.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has applauded members for their continuous fight against illegal mining.
