Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Northern Cape Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit is investigating cases of Kidnapping, Assault GBH (with intent to cause grievous bodily harm), Defeating or obstructing the course of justice and Contravention of Section 18(a) read with sections 1;24;25 and Section 26 of Act 12 of 2004 – Unacceptable conduct relating to Witnesses following the arrest of five (5)males including a former SAPS Lieutenant Colonel, two police Sergeants and two other males on Monday, 09 September 2024 in Kimberley. It is believed that two of the suspects of whom one is the former police officer were allegedly involved in the kidnapping and assault of the victim on 06 August 2023, who was allegedly accused of robbing and assaulting the former SAPS member’s son. The two police sergeants stationed at Roodepan Detective Services are facing charges of Defeating or Obstructing the course of justice and Contravention of Section 18(a) read with sections 1;24;25 and Section 26 of Act 12 of 2004 – Unacceptable conduct relating to Witnesses. The 5 suspects appeared in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s court on Monday, 09 September 2024 and were released on bail of R1000-00 each and their next court appearance will be on 07 October 2024 in the Kimberley Regional Court. Internal disciplinary processes in terms of SAPS Disciplinary Regulations of 2016 are currently unfolding against the two SAPS members. The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola has once again condemned the involvement of SAPS members in criminal activities and reiterated that any form of gross misconduct within the ranks of the organisation, will be dealt with decisively. Police officials are not above the law and it expected of each member to lead by example and face the full might of the law when implicated in crime. Ends
