Two Killed, One Injured In Shooting At Parkgate Taxi Rank
Two men have been killed and a third injured in a shooting at the Parkgate taxi rank in Parkgate, Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, today, Tuesday morning.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers responded after witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a grey vehicle flee the scene. Officers found a taxi operator and a food stall owner dead from gunshot wounds. A second taxi operator was found seated inside a white Nissan bakkie with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen.
According to RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram, the injured man told officers that he and his friend, both taxi operators, were sitting with the stall owner inside the informal food stall, as they regularly did, when an unidentified grey vehicle arrived. Its occupants allegedly opened fire.
Two rifle cartridge casings and one projectile were recovered at the scene. RUSA paramedics treated and stabilised the survivor before transporting him to a medical facility. The motive for the attack has not been established, and no further details about the suspects or their vehicle were immediately available.
Police are investigating. The incident comes amid ongoing concerns over violence linked to the taxi industry in KwaZulu-Natal.
