The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Parliamentary chief whip Mzwanele Manyi has described today’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) as a ‘fake address and a waste of time’.
This year’s State of the Nation Address will be President Cyril Ramaphosa’s first speech under the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Ramaphosa’s SONA outlines government’s plans for the upcoming year.
Speaking to SABC Digital News, Manyi says even though they know that nothing good will come out of SONA, they will still be attending the national address.
Manyi adds that the government is out of touch with the realities of ordinary citizens.
“There’s absolutely nothing to look forward to … but we will be here to take note from this fake address and we will respond factually during the debate on the 11th. We will do a proper submission to show that there’s nothing to look forward to.”
Manyi says over the years, the President has been making promises that he and his Cabinet have failed to fulfill.
Responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about withdrawing funding to the country, Manyi says Trump is doing what is best for Americans.
“Trump is doing everything to further the interests of America. We must not take it personal, he’s just looking out for his country.”
The MKP Parliamentary chief whip says if Ramaphosa was also putting the citizens of the country first, South Africa would be in a better position.
“South Africa must look after South Africans but that is not happening. We send out our minerals for 2 cents. We are plunging our people into more poverty. How can America threaten us with anything? Those people depend on us. When they make their future projections, they depend on our iron ore.”
On load shedding, Manyi says government has lied to the country.
He says load shedding will continue to be a challenge to the country even in the future.
