Tinkler confirmed as Durban City coach on return from Ghana

Eric Tinkler is back in the Betway Premiership, with Durban City FC confirming his appointment as the club’s new head coach.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder returns to South African football after his recent spell with Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko, replacing Khalil Ben Youssef.

Tinkler, a 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner with Bafana, has previously coached Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United, bringing considerable experience to a Durban City side with big ambitions.

The 54-year-old arrives at a crucial stage of the season, with the club preparing to return to domestic action after the FIFA international break.

“I’m excited to be part of what is being built here at Durban City FC,” Tinkler said.

“The club is very ambitious. They have made positive strides in a short space of time, competing in the CAF Confederation Cup already, and that made my decision easy.”

Tinkler also revealed that his previous relationship with chairman Farook Kadodia played a major role in his decision.

The pair worked together at Maritzburg United, where Tinkler guided the club to the 2019 Telkom Knockout final.

“When the opportunity presented itself to come back, I grabbed it with both hands,” he said.

Tinkler does not plan to overhaul the team, insisting the focus will be on building on the foundations laid last season.

“I don’t want to make massive changes because last season the club was successful. It’s about giving others an opportunity and getting back to winning ways.”

His targets are clear: a top-eight finish, a strong CAF Confederation Cup run and competing for the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup.

“There’s a lot to play for,” Tinkler said. His first game in charge will be confirmed by the club.
