DURBAN IN FLAMES: Anti-Illegal Immigrant Protests Rock CBD as Demonstrators Demand Home Affairs Halt Refugee Documentation

Chaos and violence erupted across the Durban Central Business District (CBD) as intense anti-illegal immigrant protests left parts of the city engulfed in flames.

Demonstrators took to the streets in large numbers, demanding that the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Centre immediately halt the documentation and processing of undocumented foreign nationals.

The situation escalated rapidly in the Berea area, where a massive fire broke out at a local tire shop on Moran Lane.

The business is reportedly owned by foreign nationals. EThekwini municipal police rushed to the scene in a frantic bid to salvage property and tires from the burning building, battling thick black smoke and advancing flames.

Firefighters and emergency services arrived shortly after to assist law enforcement in neutralizing the blaze.

Witnesses described scenes of pandemonium as law enforcement struggled to maintain order amid widespread anger and highly charged confrontations between local residents and migrant business owners.

Protest organizers claim that local infrastructure and economic opportunities are being overwhelmed, pointing their grievances directly at the Department of Home Affairs.

They argue that the continuous documentation of refugees at the city’s central hub exacerbates local tensions.

Authorities have urged for calm and deployed additional law enforcement units to monitor hot spots and prevent further looting and arson across the city center.
