Media Statement PARKTOWN – The on-going efforts of the law enforcement agencies in Gauteng Province to fight crime through Operation Shanela remains resolute as the team arrests 1100 suspects for various crimes. The multi-disciplinary Operation which is comprised of different law enforcement agencies and stakeholders such as SAPS, Metro Police Department, Department of Home Affairs, Community Safety, Home Affairs, Traffic, private security companies and Community Policing Forum is conducted simultaneously throughout the five districts in the province and will continue to intensify throughout the festive season. During the operation, various crime prevention activities that included roadblocks, vehicle check points, patrols at hotspot areas and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, second hand goods dealers and scrapyards are conducted. All these actions, resulted in the arrest of 301 suspects for drunk and driving, public drinking, possession of drugs, dealing in drugs and contravening the Immigration Act. Meanwhile the detectives across the province arrested 799 wanted suspects during their suspects raiding operation which is conducted the night before the main Operation Shanela. The suspects were wanted for crimes such as murder, assault GBH, rape, armed robbery, attempted murder and house breaking amongst others. Some suspects have been released after paying fines while the others are expected to appear before various Magistrates’ Court starting from 09 December 2024.
