Thapelo Maseko set for European move as Sundowns exit looms
Thapelo Maseko is closing in on a move to Denmark, with the Mamelodi Sundowns winger reportedly agreeing a three-year contract with FC Copenhagen.
SoccerBeat reports that the two clubs have reached an agreement over a transfer fee believed to be in excess of R25 million. Maseko is expected to travel for his medical in the coming days before completing the move.
The 22-year-old’s departure comes after a difficult period at Sundowns, where opportunities became limited under coach Miguel Cardoso. He was sent out on loan to Cypriot side AEL Limassol in January in search of regular first-team football. He made 15 appearances across all competitions during his spell, scoring two goals and providing one assist.
Maseko subsequently returned to Sundowns but was left out of the club’s pre-season tour to Austria. The club then gave him permission to find a new team, signalling that his future at Chloorkop was uncertain. The winger originally joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in 2023 and has also established himself as a Bafana Bafana international.
His move to Copenhagen would represent another major step in his career and give him an opportunity to test himself in European football.
For Sundowns, the deal could bring a significant financial return on a player they signed as one of South Africa’s promising young attacking talents.
The medical now stands as the next major step before the transfer can be finalised.
