Sundowns coach admits worry ahead of Chiefs blockbuster

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has admitted he is unhappy with the way his team is conceding goals ahead of their blockbuster clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Portuguese coach is particularly concerned about Sundowns’ defending from set pieces. The Brazilians conceded another goal from a set piece in their latest match against TS Galaxy, just as they did against Polokwane City in the MTN8 last weekend.

It is the third time Sundowns have conceded from a set piece in just two matches. Cardoso believes the problem needs to be fixed quickly, especially with Chiefs next.

“It is crazy that we have conceded three times from set pieces in two matches,” Cardoso said. He pointed out that Sundowns played 50 matches last season but did not concede so many set-piece goals.

The coach believes confidence is at the heart of the problem. “We need to fix that and bring back the confidence because everything is about confidence,” he explained.

You cannot defend a set piece without confidence. When it happens, you need to have the confidence to deal with it.” With Chiefs awaiting, Cardoso will be desperate for his defenders to solve the problem before the two giants collide.
