Mthethwa, who was terrorising the areas of Richards Bay, KwaMbonambi and Empangeni, started his raping spree in March 2017, when he raped a woman and strangled her with the intention to kill her at KwaMbonambi.

During his cold-blooded raping spree, Mthethwa also came across three women in Richards Bay.

He fired a shot at one woman and raped the other whilst forcing the other victims to witness the act.

With police realizing that there was a serial rapist on the loose, a team of dedicated detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit connected the dots and Mthethwa was stopped on his tracks in 2021.

His reign of terror ended when he was arrested and charged on 21 counts, inclusive of rape, attempted murder, business robbery, house breaking and assault.

His youngest rape victim was a 13-year-old girl whom he raped after breaking into the house she was sleeping in.

Mthethwa’s name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

One of the latest victims, a 23-year-old student and e-hailing driver from Nelson Mandela Bay, says his life has been turned upside down since being lured into a trap in August.

“The fear is still with me every single day,” he said. “I don’t feel safe anymore … I’m scared.”

According to police, the man arranged to meet someone he’d been chatting to on Grindr. Instead, he was ambushed, beaten, and forced into his own car. Armed attackers demanded his PIN, withdrew cash from his account, and eventually abandoned him in a field.

Similar incidents have been reported in recent months, echoing a pattern first uncovered in 2023, when three men were arrested for using the app to target gay men. Those cases collapsed after victims withdrew from court proceedings.

Despite previous arrests, the attacks are resurfacing. Police confirmed two new cases are under investigation in Nelson Mandela Bay, with striking similarities to earlier crimes. Victims are lured with the promise of a date, then kidnapped, assaulted, and extorted.

A Growing Threat Across the Country

These cases are not isolated. In Johannesburg, a student was recently strangled and robbed after arranging a meeting through the app. In Cape Town, men in their 40s and 50s have been abducted and assaulted in separate incidents.

Queer advocacy groups have called the situation a crisis. Seven organisations are demanding urgent action, linking the rise in attacks to what’s become known as the “Grindr Gang” case, in which seven suspects face charges of abducting and extorting a young queer man in Johannesburg in 2023.

Last year, private security firms even suggested banning Grindr in South Africa due to the growing number of cases.

Calls for Safety and Accountability

Activists argue that Grindr has not done enough to protect its users, despite publishing online safety guides and encouraging people to report suspicious activity. For many victims, however, shame, fear, and stigma prevent them from going to the police.

For the Nelson Mandela Bay victim, the scars run deeper than the physical assault.

“I’ve used Grindr since I was in school to connect with people I couldn’t meet anywhere else,” he said. “It always felt safe enough — until that night. Now I’m too afraid to even open the app again.”

The minors were released into the custody of their parents under the Child Justice Act.

The alleged assault, said to have happened in October 2024 at Bergview College in Matatiele, sparked a national outcry. By April, protests had spread across the country demanding justice for the young girl.

But behind the scenes, the NPA had already made its decision months earlier. In November 2024, prosecutors declined to pursue the case after a review of the evidence presented by police. According to NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga, interviews and medical examinations failed to confirm that rape or sexual assault had taken place.

Despite this, outrage continued to grow, fueled by social media speculation and public statements from officials. Accusations were leveled at the school principal and a caretaker, with their personal information widely shared online. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu even referred to the principal as a suspect, adding to the controversy.

However, AfriForum—which is now representing both the principal and caretaker—insists their clients were never officially named as suspects by the authorities. The police later conceded this point.

In response to mounting public pressure, police reopened the investigation and appointed a top official, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele, to oversee the case. But attempts to move forward hit a roadblock when Cwecwe’s mother declined to allow further interviews with her daughter, saying the child was still unwell.

A private doctor had initially confirmed signs of rape, and GroundUp was shown a medical report supporting this. But the police say they found no foreign DNA on the child’s clothing and could not collect new forensic evidence.

AfriForum claims the investigation is being driven by public pressure rather than solid evidence. “Innocent people have been convicted in the court of public opinion,” the organization said in a recent statement.

The case remains in limbo, with the police resubmitting the docket for reconsideration. Meanwhile, communities across South Africa continue to demand justice—whether for a crime that happened, or for those wrongly accused.
