Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Regional Court in Sutherland recently handed down a 7 year prison sentence to 33-year-old Tertius October following the intentional sexual touching of a 12-year-old girl in Sutherland on Saturday, 20 April 2022. The Court heard that the victim was at her home with friends when the accused grabbed her arm and touched her inappropriately. The accused fled when she screamed. The victim reported the incident to her father, who alerted the police and subsequently arrested the accused. The Court imposed a 7 year prison sentence for sexual assault for which 2 years is suspended for 5 years on condition that he does not commit any other related crime. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola applauded the Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Jacques Nielsen for ensuring that those who violate children’s rights through exploitation, abuse, neglect or harmful practices are brought to book. She urged all communities to rate the police efforts by participating in the “RATE OUR SERVICE” online survey to assist the police in improving services. Ends
