Soweto Kota Festival returns for its 9th year with culture, food, and enterprise
SID Entertainment Pty Ltd is proud to announce the return of the Soweto Kota Festival for its ninth consecutive year. The event will take place on 5 and 6 September 2026 at the Elkah Cricket Oval in Rockville, Soweto.
Since its inception nine years ago, the Soweto Kota Festival has established itself at the pinnacle of local events. Consistently drawing over 15,000 attendees and selling out without fail, the festival has become a major attraction for kota lovers and families seeking a fun day out.
While the target market is predominantly the youth, the festival successfully attracts people of all ages from all walks of life. Fun is guaranteed for everyone. Entertainment is a major highlight of the event, with guests eagerly anticipating a fresh line-up of artists performing live music. Attendees will be spoiled for choice when it comes to their favourite kota cuisine.
Approximately 40 vendors are expected at the event, each displaying their unique culinary style with kotas starting from as little as R60.
Drink stalls will be available, and Ola will be on-site to keep children and those with a sweet tooth satisfied. An increasing number of sponsors have shown interest in the event, particularly within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. This interest aligns with growing consumer creativity, as people add diverse ingredients to enhance the traditional kota—historically filled with chips, atchaar, and polony—truly celebrating a proudly South African dish.
The festival also drives community upliftment by employing over 40 unemployed youth from around Soweto during the event, assisting them in providing for their families. Furthermore, the organisers will be driven by Renault, one of the event’s prominent sponsors. Festival organiser Sidwell Tshingilane expressed his gratitude to all current and past supporters, noting that the event would not be possible without them.
The Soweto Kota Festival is an annual celebration of music, food, and culture that has grown into one of Soweto’s flagship community events.
Last year’s eighth edition drew a total turnout of over 16,000 people—with 9,000 attendees on Saturday and 7,000 on Sunday—alongside more than 70 kota vendors serving up the country’s favourite township sandwich.
Since its founding, the festival has expanded significantly from roughly 15,000 visitors in 2019 to a record 18,000 in its fifth year, cementing its place as a cornerstone of Soweto’s cultural calendar. Beyond food and entertainment, the festival plays a meaningful role in local economic development.
It generates revenue for small businesses, creates short-term jobs, and gives emerging entrepreneurs a national platform. Past sponsors and partners have highlighted the festival’s authenticity and its unique ability to connect brands directly with communities.
The upcoming media launch is scheduled to take place at the Soweto Theatre, the historical venue where the inaugural Soweto Kota Festival took place nine years ago. Official partners will be unveiled at the launch, and the media will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding the festival’s activities. The 2026 edition promises live performances from top local artists across both days, alongside brand activations, giveaways, and interactive experiences from festival partners.
The event will host over 70 kota vendors and general traders. It will also feature the highly anticipated Best Kota Competition to crown the country’s top vendor. The 2025 title went to 2 Selai, with Zaza’s Eatery and Ko-boiketlong Situations taking second and third place respectively.
“The Soweto Kota Festival is more than an event — it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Soweto,” says Tshingilane. “As we head into our ninth year, we’re excited to welcome media, partners, and fans back to experience what makes this festival so special.”
