SIU Intensifies Hunt For Eight Luxury Cars Allegedly Hidden By Hangwani Maumela
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is intensifying efforts to locate eight luxury vehicles allegedly hidden by businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela as part of its investigation into corruption and procurement irregularities at Tembisa Hospital.
Today, Friday, 30 October 2026, an SIU-appointed curator, accompanied by investigators, visited a property in Midrand, Johannesburg, following an anonymous tip-off that a Bentley belonging to Maumela had allegedly been hidden there. The property is reportedly linked to one of his associates. However, the vehicle was not found during the search.
SIU spokesperson Selby Makgotho confirmed that the operation forms part of the unit’s ongoing asset-recovery efforts.
The curator is already in possession of 15 vehicles linked to the investigation. The eight outstanding vehicles comprise four Ferraris, three Porsches and one Bentley. The SIU says it will continue tracing the vehicles to ensure they are placed under the curator’s control in accordance with court orders.
In October 2025, the Special Tribunal issued a preservation order directing members of the alleged Maumela Syndicate to disclose, under oath, all their property, assets, funds, investments and related interests.
The SIU has identified 1,728 procurement bundles worth approximately R816.5 million linked to the alleged syndicate. The investigation has also uncovered assets worth hundreds of millions of rands, including luxury properties and vehicles.
The investigation was triggered by concerns raised by the late Gauteng Department of Health official Babita Deokaran, who flagged suspicious payments at Tembisa Hospital. Maumela has been identified as a central figure in an alleged looting scheme estimated to involve approximately R2 billion.
The SIU has also indicated that it is considering contempt-of-court proceedings over alleged non-compliance with court orders and continued legal challenges.
Meanwhile, separate court rulings have paved the way for the sale of at least one preserved Ferrari SF90 Stradale, valued at approximately R9.5 million to R10 million, with the proceeds to be held pending the finalisation of legal proceedings.
The SIU says it remains committed to tracing and recovering assets allegedly acquired through unlawful activities and preventing their concealment.
