Media Statement HUMANSDORP – The Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka praised his charges after a total of 272 people were either nabbed or fined for crimes ranging from traffic offences to murder during operations that were conducted during the launch of the District Safer Festive Season Operations in seven (07) municipalities, which make up the Sarah Baartman District. It took multi-disciplinary forces, effectively seven (07) days for them to flex their muscles, and gauge their level of readiness and to also make their presence felt. The combat operations were conducted simultaneously with formal proceedings of the launch in different local municipalities, while the district commissioner and some dignitaries were busy with the official proceedings, the foot soldiers were conducting several operations in hot-spot areas and also raided several drug posts. During these operations, scrap metals valued over R164 000 were confiscated and six spaza shops were also fined for non-compliance with several municipal by-laws. The last event (launch), which was held in Port Alfred under Ndlambe Local Municipality on Thursday, 21 November 2024, was also attended by the MEC for Community Safety, Honourable Xolile Nqatha, with a subsequent community engagement at the Titi Jonas Multi-purpose Community Centre in Nemato (Port Alfred). The seven towns, which hosted these activities: 1. 6th November 2024, Makhanda (Makana Local Municipality) 2. 8th November 2024, Jeffreys Bay (Kouga Local Municipality) 3. 13th November 2024, Joubertina (Koukamma Local Municipality) 4. 14th November 2024, Nqweba, (Sundays River Valley Local Municipality) 5. 15th November 2024, Graaff Reinet (Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality) 6. 19th November 2024, KwaNojoli (Blue Crane Route Local Municipality) 7. 21st November 2024, Port Alfred (Ndlambe Local Municipality) All these events were characterized by what is commonly known as the show of force. This year’s Safer Festive Season Operations are being held under the theme, “Combating Crime through Decisive Police Action and Robust Community Involvement” The District Commissioner, Maj Gen Zolani Xawuka during his address, he asserted, “MEC, I am certain that for this year, we have DOT THE I’S AND CROSS THE T’S, and to reassure you and everyone that our operational plans are going to squeeze the space for criminals to operate in our streets. We have also managed to establish relations with other pertinent stakeholders, who are willing to augment our foot soldiers , as force multipliers”, concluded Maj Gen Xawuka Ends
