Williams dedicates Man-of-the-Match award to goalkeepers after Milford heroics
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has dedicated his Man-of-the-Match award to goalkeepers across South Africa.
The Bafana Bafana captain produced several important saves against Milford FC on Wednesday night.
His performance helped Sundowns secure a 2-0 victory in their Betway Premiership clash.
Williams kept a clean sheet despite Milford creating moments of danger during the match.
The award came at an important time for the experienced goalkeeper.
Williams had recently faced increased criticism over his performances for Sundowns.
Some supporters even suggested that the goalkeeper had reached his peak.
Others called for him to be rested after a difficult spell.
However, Williams responded with a commanding performance between the posts against Milford.
Speaking after the match, the Sundowns captain acknowledged the pressure facing goalkeepers.
He insisted that the criticism is not unique to him. Williams also used the opportunity to encourage his fellow goalkeepers to remain focused.
“This is for our department,” Williams said. “To Denis (Onyango), to Ricardo (Goss), to Reyaad (Pieterse) and especially to coach Kennedy Mweene.
“The criticism we have taken, we just keep going. And it is not only here. It is the whole league.
“I want Sipho Chaine to keep going and keep doing his best. Brandon Petersen too. He was amazing last season, but now he is going through things.
“But he will reach that level again. That is the nature of goalkeeping. I am proud of all the keepers and I am always encouraging them to keep going.
“We must keep pushing because our position is going higher and higher. We have even changed the way goalkeepers are looked at now. I am just glad, and this award is for all the goalkeepers.”
