Mofokeng shines, and scores as Union Saint-Gilloise cruise to second place
Relebohile Mofokeng scored his second league goal in four games on Wednesday as Union Saint-Gilloise beat Sint-Truiden 3-0 away from home.
The victory lifted Union to second place in the Belgian league standings. They now have 10 points from their opening four matches of the new season.
Mofokeng was handed his first league start since joining Union from Orlando Pirates.
The 21-year-old repaid coach David Hubert’s faith with an impressive performance and a well-taken goal.
Union enjoyed a comfortable evening despite playing away from home. Louis Patris opened the scoring after 22 minutes against his former club.
Kevin Mac Allister then doubled Union’s advantage 10 minutes into the second half.
The Argentine defender headed home from a free-kick to make it 2-0. Mofokeng completed the scoring in the 63rd minute.
Union produced a superb team move across the artificial surface. The attack featured quick one-touch passes between several players.
Mofokeng was at the end of the move and calmly placed the ball into the far corner.
The South African celebrated his first league start with a huge smile. Mofokeng previously scored against Westerlo in early August.
He came off the bench to score in Union’s 5-1 away victory. That was his debut appearance in the Belgian league this season.
He has since made two more substitute appearances in the competition. Mofokeng has also featured in the Champions League and Belgian Super Cup.
He scored the decisive penalty in the Super Cup shootout. That helped Union secure their first trophy of the season.
The latest performance could now give Mofokeng a major boost as he looks to establish himself in Belgium.
