REDDERSBURG – A 29-year-old male named Clifford Mphou was sentenced to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for raping a mentally challenged woman in Matoropong near Reddersburg. Trompsburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit had a difficult case to crack after a 30-year-old woman was raped twice on different nights from 27 September 2015 at her shack in Matoropong, near Reddersburg. The perpetrator forced entry into the victim’s shack and raped her. The victim could not recognise the perpetrator as it was dark. Two counts of rape were opened for investigation and assigned to Detective Sergeant Isaac Ntsepe of Trompsburg FCS. He collected evidence at the scene and sent it to be further analysed at the Forensic Science Laboratory. The accused committed another crime, which is still pending, where his DNA was taken and it positively linked to the DNA found at the crime scene of two counts of rape.
Clifford Mphou was positively linked through DNA to have committed these crimes. He was convicted and sentenced to 22 years’ direct imprisonment before Reddersburg Regional Court on 7 February 2025.
