Police intercept R28 million cocaine shipment at OR Tambo in major anti-smuggling operation
South African police have dealt another significant blow to international drug trafficking after intercepting a massive cocaine shipment worth an estimated R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport.
The 95 kilogram consignment, which arrived aboard a cargo flight from São Paulo, Brazil, was seized during a targeted intelligence driven operation on Friday, 31 July 2026. While no arrests have been made, investigators are working to identify the criminal network behind the attempted smuggling.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the drugs were discovered in the airport’s cargo section at approximately 1pm after officers acted on intelligence received from the SAPS Crime Intelligence Border Integrity Unit.
The operation brought together members of SAPS Visible Policing, Customs officials and Menzies Aviation personnel, highlighting the growing emphasis on coordinated action to disrupt organised crime at South Africa’s busiest international gateway.
Authorities estimate the street value of the cocaine at around R28 million, making it one of the more substantial drug seizures recorded at OR Tambo International Airport in recent months.
Although the shipment was successfully intercepted before it could enter local distribution channels, investigators have not yet arrested any suspects. Police say the investigation remains active as specialised teams work to trace those responsible for orchestrating the importation of the narcotics.
The seizure once again places OR Tambo International Airport at the centre of South Africa’s ongoing battle against transnational drug trafficking. Criminal syndicates continue to exploit global air cargo routes to move illicit substances across international borders, prompting law enforcement agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and border security operations.
Police believe intelligence led operations remain one of the most effective tools in disrupting sophisticated smuggling networks that operate across multiple countries.
SAPS has reiterated its commitment to working with border control partners and aviation stakeholders to prevent illegal drugs from entering the country and to dismantle the organised crime groups responsible for international narcotics trafficking.
