Kaizer Chiefs storm to the top as Wandile Duba’s double seals winning start for Fernando da Cruz
Kaizer Chiefs could hardly have asked for a better start to their new Betway Premiership campaign.
Under the floodlights and with the weight of expectation firmly on their shoulders, Amakhosi delivered a composed and clinical 3-1 victory over newly promoted Kruger United on Saturday night. It was a result that not only handed Fernando da Cruz a winning debut in his first competitive match as head coach but also lifted Chiefs to the top of the league table after the opening round of fixtures.
The evening began exactly as the visitors had hoped.
Chiefs wasted little time asserting themselves and broke the deadlock in the seventh minute. Flavio Da Silva found space inside the penalty area before calmly guiding his finish beyond the goalkeeper to hand Amakhosi an early lead.

Khethukuthula Ndlovu produced a moment of real quality, curling a superb effort into the back of the net to level the scores and send both teams into the dressing rooms locked at 1-1. The equaliser shifted the momentum and set up an intriguing second half.
Da Cruz responded with decisive tactical changes after the interval, and they transformed the match.
Substitute Wandile Duba made an immediate impact after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area. Following a punched clearance by the Kruger United goalkeeper, the young forward pounced to restore Chiefs’ advantage and reignite the visitors’ momentum.
With confidence flowing, Duba struck again in the 66th minute. His second goal of the evening completed a memorable brace and effectively ended Kruger United’s hopes of rescuing the contest, stretching Chiefs’ lead to 3-1.
Despite continued efforts from the newly promoted side, Chiefs remained organised and disciplined in defence. Kruger searched for another breakthrough, but Amakhosi comfortably managed the closing stages to secure all three points.
The victory represents an ideal beginning for Da Cruz as he embarks on his tenure at one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs. Beyond the winning start, the performance offered encouraging signs of attacking intent, squad depth and resilience after surrendering their first half advantage.
Chiefs now sit at the summit of the Betway Premiership standings on goal difference after the opening weekend, edging Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates, who also claimed victory in their opening fixture earlier on Saturday.
For Amakhosi supporters, it is an early statement of intent. While the season is still in its infancy, the combination of an impressive team display and Duba’s match winning contribution has provided fresh optimism that Chiefs could be ready to mount a serious challenge in the months ahead.
