PARKTOWN – Employees of a company that is contracted to the banks to attend and revamp ATMs that are bombed are among four suspects who were arrested after they were found with stained cash. The suspects were arrested at different places on Thursday, 13 February 2025. Police received information from one of the major banks about suspects who are depositing stained money into ATM machines. Through investigation, it came out that some of the suspects were employees of a company contracted to the bank to clean up and replace ATMs after they have been bombed. A team, comprising of SAPS Crime Intelligence, Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit, Provincial Investigation Unit, JMPD K9, Bank Investigators and Vusela Covert, proceeded to the company where one suspect was found. Upon searching the suspect, police found washed money, and more stained cash was found at his residence. Further investigation led the team to Alexandra and Tembisa, where three more suspects, including the ringleader, were arrested after they were found with stained cash worth more than one hundred and sixty thousand rands (R160 000) and chemicals used to clean stained money.
The suspects are expected to appear before Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 February 2025.
