Pitso Mosimane says Mofokeng is the future — and he’s already proving it
Pitso Mosimane isn’t waiting around. The new Bafana Bafana coach has singled out 21-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng as a player he trusts more than the previous regime did — and he wants him in a bigger role.
Mofokeng has already shown he can wear several shirts. At Orlando Pirates he was a winger under José Riveiro. Abdeslam Ouaddou later pushed him into the No.10. Hugo Broos used him there too and was blunt: this kid is not a winger.
Mosimane sees something else — versatility that actually produces. He saw this in Mofokeng’s games for Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Jupiler League.
“I don’t know if the coach did not believe in him. I have to go with what is right,” he said.
“I saw the boy playing very well in his last two games… he dribbled, he played in the different role of the 3-4-3 and he has been used as a 10, and on the right… scoring goals.
“Remember we used to see him playing as a winger, suddenly he is a 10 in a 4-2-3-1. The boy shows us he can play in different formations and wherever he has been playing, he’s been scoring or assisting.
“It’s good, let’s keep going with him, he is young. 2030 we need to build on that platform and give them a chance. He is scoring in Europe, in a high league.”
That last part is not talk. At Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, Mofokeng has three goals in five league games and already has silverware — he scored the winning penalty in the Super Cup against Club Brugge.
Young, adaptable, scoring at a high level. Mosimane’s message is simple: keep feeding him minutes. Bafana’s next cycle starts now.
