Pirates confirm Maswanganyi’s departure for Bahrain in shock transfer
Orlando Pirates have confirmed a deal has been struck with Bahrain Premier League outfit Alkhaldiya Sports Club for the transfer of fan favourite Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi, bringing an end to the 28-year-old playmaker’s spell at the Buccaneers.
The move comes despite Maswanganyi remaining firmly in the technical team’s plans for the season. The club however says that after talks with the player and his representatives, it became clear he was determined to pursue a fresh challenge overseas.
Rather than stand in his way, the club opted to honour his wishes, and a transfer to the Bahraini side was subsequently concluded. It’s a significant departure for Pirates, with Maswanganyi having become one of the most popular figures in the black and white jersey in recent seasons.
In a statement, the club paid tribute to his impact both on and off the pitch, saying he gave the Ghost countless moments to celebrate and represented the club with pride from his very first appearance. He leaves Pirates with silverware to his name, having won the league title during his time at the club, while also being widely regarded as a firm favourite among the Pirates faithful — a player who understood exactly what it meant to represent the badge.
Confirming the move, Pirates thanked Maswanganyi for his dedicated service and wished him well as he begins the next chapter of his career in Bahrain.
The Buccaneers are now expected to turn their attention to the transfer market as they look to fill the creative void left by his exit, with the search for a replacement likely to dominate headlines in the coming days.
