Paulus Masehe Explains Sekhukhune United’s Struggles After Pirates Defeats
For Sekhukhune United, a difficult week against Orlando Pirates ended with their MTN8 dreams in tatters. Three defeats in the space of seven days exposed the vulnerability of a team still finding its identity after a major squad overhaul.
Babina Noko were beaten 1-0 by Pirates in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final before suffering a 2-0 defeat against the same opponents in the Betway Premiership.
The final blow came in the return leg of the MTN8 semi-final, when Pirates produced another commanding performance to win 3-0 and seal a 4-0 aggregate victory.
For Sekhukhune, the result brought an abrupt end to their cup campaign and left the Limpopo side facing difficult questions about their form.
But assistant coach Paulus Masehe believes the recent setbacks cannot be viewed in isolation.
Instead, he says they are part of the growing pains of a team undergoing a significant rebuilding process.
“This season we are in a transition period whereby we are rebuilding,” Masehe said.
“We have introduced a whole lot of youngsters and let go of a whole lot of experienced players.”
The changes have fundamentally altered the character of the squad.
Sekhukhune parted ways with several experienced players during the off-season and replaced them with a mixture of new signings and younger talent. That approach has given the club an opportunity to build for the future, but Masehe acknowledged that it also comes with inevitable difficulties.
The three consecutive defeats against Pirates offered a stark reminder of those challenges.
Rather than allowing the results to define the season, however, Masehe believes Sekhukhune must use the setbacks as part of the learning process.
“There are lessons to learn from the negatives, but there are a lot of positives that we can nurture,” he added.
That message reflects the reality facing a side caught between two phases.
Sekhukhune are no longer relying on the experienced core that helped establish the club as a competitive force in South African football. At the same time, the younger players now being asked to carry greater responsibility are still developing.
“The process is unlikely to be smooth.”
For now, Masehe wants the club to look beyond the painful scorelines and concentrate on developing the players and performances that can form the foundation of a stronger Sekhukhune United in the future.
The immediate challenge is turning those lessons into results. After a week in which Orlando Pirates exposed the gap between the two sides, Sekhukhune must now regroup and prove that their rebuilding project can produce a team capable of competing at the highest level.
