Pastor Handed Life Sentence for Rape as Ntuzuma Community Celebrates Justice
Joy and relief swept through the community of Ntuzuma outside Durban on Thursday following the sentencing of Pastor Mandla Mahlaba, a local religious leader who was handed a life sentence for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
The case first made headlines after furious community members confronted Mahlaba over allegations that he had abused three young girls from his congregation.
Among the initial allegations was the abuse of his own stepdaughter, a case that drew widespread condemnation.
In an interview, Mahlaba previously admitted to impregnating his stepdaughter but dismissed it as a private family matter, even claiming he intended to take her as a wife.
Although that child subsequently gave birth, the victim’s mother withdrew the charges in court, and a second parent failed to file an official complaint.
As a result, the state proceeded with a single trial involving a 13-year-old Ntuzuma girl.
Following a rigorous three-year court battle, Mahlaba was finally found guilty.
The depth of public anger against the pastor was evident early on.
When the allegations first surfaced, an angry mob marched to his church building and burned it to the ground.
Mahlaba was already a notorious figure in the area; congregants alleged that he regularly forced them to eat sour milk and sheep carcasses that he slaughtered every Sunday.
In handing down the life sentence, the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court described Mahlaba as a cruel man who is unfit to live among civilized human beings.
The presiding magistrate emphasized that removing him from society was necessary to ensure the safety and peace of the community.
Speaking after the verdict, the mother of the 13-year-old victim expressed immense relief. Her identity is being withheld to protect her daughter.
“If there was a punishment higher than a life sentence, I would say Mahlaba deserves it,” she said. “He completely betrayed us. We trusted him as a pastor, completely unaware that he was a cruel rapist.”
While the mother expressed gratitude that justice was served, she noted that the psychological scars remain deep, adding that her daughter’s school performance has plummeted since the assault and that she is still searching for professional support.
Following the court proceedings, jubilant community members gathered at the site of the ruined church to host a celebratory event, marking the end of a painful chapter for the neighborhood.
