Media Statement KIMBERLEY – Operation Vala Umgodi team members embarked on an operation focusing on illegal mining activities on Saturday, 30 March 2024, during which a vehicle was recovered in Kommagas. The vehicle was reported stolen in Milnerton in Cape Town during December 2023. The silver Toyota Corolla was confiscated, and a 32-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. The disruptive intelligence driven operation led the members to a house in Buffelsrivier, where dagga, Tik and alcoholic beverages were confiscated and an illegal establishment was closed down. A 30-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of drugs. While members were executing their duties, two Zimbabwean nationals, aged 30 and 40, were arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act and attempted bribery of a police official. Numerous vehicle checkpoints (VCP) around illegal mining hotspots were conducted, and tools believe to have been used for illegal mining activities were also confiscated. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga applauded the members for their efforts in addressing illegal mining and other related crimes in the Namakwa District. Ends
