FREE STATE – The multidisciplinary approach Operation Vala Umgodi, in the Free State, continues to eliminate issues of illegal mining and clean streets in Lejweleputswa and Fezile Dabi Districts. The team, comprised of specialised units, has so far managed to claim the space from illegal miners. That is through constant disruptive operations held at key areas of their operation. Robberies, kidnappings, trespassing, illegal possession of stolen goods, unlicensed firearms and possession of gold-bearing material receive enough focus as the team engages in frequent stop-and-searches, vehicle checkpoints, ATM visits, as well as responding to intelligence-led information. The week between 22 April 2024 and 29 April 2024 saw more than 122 illegal immigrants arrested for crimes such as possession of gold-bearing material, dealing in drugs, and illegal mining. Patrol operations continue in areas such as Welkom, Viljoenskroon, Thabong, Vierfontein, Bothaville, Wesselsbron, Virginia, and Allanridge. The disruptive operations are also carried out throughout the week, and 1008 people were searched while 222 vehicles were checked during the sporadic vehicle check points held in and around Lejweleputswa.
Operation Vala Umgodi continues, and the arrested suspects will appear in court in the respective areas of detention.
