Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – Police in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and role players continue with weekly high-density Operation Shanela to prevent and combat crime. A total of 7 106 actions were executed between Monday, 16 and Sunday, 22 September 2024, and these actions led to the arrest of 1 013 suspects for various offences. The 7 106 actions included amongst others, nine roadblocks, searching of 138 premises, 2 689 persons, 1 296 vehicles, closing of 29 unlicensed liquor premises and inspection of 196 others. Furthermore, 35 Second-hand-dealers were inspected as well as 41 formal and 1 267 informal businesses involved in hospitality and retail (to ensure Labour Law compliance). Numerous patrols and stop and search actions were also conducted. The suspects were among others, arrested for crimes such as 14 for aggravating robbery, seven for murder, 11 for rape, 147 for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), 86 for common assault, eight for house and business robberies, 26 for malicious damage to property, 33 for burglary at residential and business premises, 61 for possession of drugs, five for illegal possession of firearms, 27 for illicit mining, 12 for dealing in drugs, 30 for illegal dealing in liquor, two for theft out of / from motor vehicle and 31 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Moreover, 106 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. Of the 1 013 suspects, 405 were apprehended during detectives suspect raiding operations. During the operations, a variety of drugs, cash, four dangerous weapons, 1 kg of copper, five firearms, 40 rounds of ammunition, liquor, tobacco products, three vehicles and other items were confiscated.
